  1. What is TestDaf?

TestDaf is the shortened form of Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache, meaning Test of German as a foreign language. It began in 2001. It is an advanced level language test for the non-native speakers of German language. It provides proof of German proficiency. It also helps people attain opportunities in terms of studies or employment.

The test is run by TestDaf-Institut. It covers a wide range of skills. It examines through four parts: the listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing production and speaking capability of the applicants. It is a 3hour long test without any break.

  1. Who is eligible to take TestDaf?

The eligibility criteria for TestDaf stands at minimum. The applicants must have a high school diploma to apply. Other important requirements include a proof of proficiency. It is the certificate for passing of intermediate level of the language from a recognized language teaching German language. The study hours spent should be around 700 to 1000 hours. Any applicant with these qualifications can apply for TestDaf.

  1. What are the levels of TestDaf?

Testdaf has three levels, beginning with TestDaF-Niveaustufe (TDN) 3 to 5. The grades follow this structure. These levels are equivalent to B2 to C1 in the Common European Framework for Languages of Council of Europe (CEF).

The certificate does not only print “pass or fail” as it offers the same question to every student. The paper has four parts which are graded and sub-graded differently. The result is based on the performance in each part. The levels of scoring decide the qualification of the candidates.

  1. What is the score range for TestDaf?

There is an acceptable range set for TestDaf. The preferred score range is between 16 to 18. The universities favour students having certificates with this range.

  1. How much time does it take for the certificate?

The certificate does not take much to be issued. After approximately six weeks of the examination the certificates are issued by the respective Test Centres. The certificates highlight the grades received in every part and add a detail of the level achieved in the test for better understanding.

  1. What is the cost of TestDaf?

The cost for Testdaf is decided by the TestDaf Institute. It differs from country to country. It costs around 210 Euros in Germany. At present, the cost of the test in India stands at around 8,500 rupees but it may change.

  1. Where are the test centres?

TestDaf has around 450 test centres in 95 countries all around the world. The test if offered six times a year. In India it is conducted by Goethe-Institut in five test centres – Bangalore, New Delhi, Pune, Coimbatore and Chennai.

  1. Where is TestDaf accepted?

TestDaf is a recognized test. It is accepted by all the major universities across Germany.

  1. What is the validity of TestDaf certificate?

There is no expiration of validity for the Testdaf certificate. It remains valid for an unlimited period of time.

  • How many times can one take TestDaf?

TestDaf can be repeated many times. There is no limitation imposed on the test and the candidates can re-take the exams either to pass the examination or the upgrade their range of qualification.
